There were many r&b artist that started off singing gospel music , one very notable artist: Sam Cooke. No other artist was able incorporate the gospel styling to R & B like Aretha franklin. Her first songs were jazz influenced and failed to catch on, it wasn’t until Aretha was able to sing from her soul that she became a superstar. Her rendition of Otis Redding’s “Respect” is consider one of the best song ever recorded.
Aretha Franklin helped usher in the soul sound along with Ray Charles, James Brown Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Aretha Franklin won 18 grammys , charted 23 number one singles. Aretha Franklin is ranked ninth as the best artist of all time. Aretha would influence Mary J. Blige, Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston.
